The Stratford District League was formed following many requests from clubs that had become so obsessed with short mat bowling that as well as the friendly matches organised between themselves they expressed a wish to enter into league playing. In October 1998 clubs' members in conjunction with SDC formed a league committee and the 1998/99 league season got underway with 5 teams playing 8 matches each. So much so that in the 2001 - 2002 season only 4 points separated the first 4 teams with the final result going down to the very last match of the season.
